The definition of Spirituality is --- that which relates to or affects the human spirit or soul, as opposed to material or physical things. Spirituality touches that part of you that is not dependent on material things, or physical comforts.
Can a company, act in a Spiritual manner?
I work in a building in NYC that has many Religious people. (I am going to make broad generalizations here, and this is not an indictment of any one religion)
In this building, it is commonly known that the religious people, are also the least polite. The majority of these people, do not hold a door open for those walking behind themselves. It seems as though they are unaware, and could care less about others around them.
A definition of Religion is as follows: The Body of Persons adhering to a particular set of beliefs and practices.
Can a company, act in Religious manner?
I would argue that most companies, act in a Religious manner. Most companies adhere to their product, and most sales people PUSH THEIR RELIGION (company product or service) ON OTHERS. It's the nature of why companies exist.....and it is totally legitimate to do so.
But...
Companies that do not prepare their sales representatives properly -- push themselves on you. Think of a telemarketer who calls your home, and launches into their pitch. I respect telemarketers, and I am ALWAYS polite to them when they call our house. They are just doing their job, but -- at least they are, honest in their message and style of bombarding you with their corporate RELIGION. (of what they are trying to sell)
Other types of sales people metaphorically wear the clothes and symbols of a religion (the company), but they lack compassion -- they lack the fundamental aspect of really caring, of really understanding the human emotion, of who they are selling to. They are unaware that they need to hold the doors open.
To them, its all about the dogmatic pursuit of beliefs and practices - and pushing it onto others. We see them all around us. We see them in our politicians, we see them in our co-workers, we see them in our vendors -- we even see them, in ourselves. They are fundamentally unaware that they need to hold the doors open.
It sometimes comes out (ends up) as a sale.
But, more frequently it ends up as a "door not held." Or, entering an elevator, before occupants exit. It leaves a bitter taste. Wasted time.
It is RUDE. And, the perception of it's (religion) adherents are viewed as rude, insensitive -- and lacking spirituality by those on the OUTSIDE. The same way that many view the Religious People in our building.
The people on the "outside" (above) are your companies prospects.
The people with "religion" (above) are each of our respective companies.
Do you, or your company have a sufficient amount of spirituality?
Here is the quick test that a Sales Representative should know about his/her key clients:
1) What is the biggest challenge facing our client?
2) What is their most important task, and how are they judged by their superiors?
3) What is the single accomplishment they are most proud of in their careers?
4) How does our product, or service help them in any of the 3 questions above?
If you cannot answer any of these questions -- I would argue you are a TOO RELIGIOUS, and need to find some SPIRITUALITY ASAP.
Spirituality touches that part of you that is not dependent on material things, or physical comforts. It's not about you, your product, your company -- but about......
Find more good energy to share. It starts with sincere concern, and seeking to understand. "what motivates others around us."
Then, maybe more doors will be held open, in life.
